The TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) blood test is a common diagnostic tool used to evaluate the functioning of the thyroid gland. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland, located in the brain, and plays a critical role in maintaining the balance of thyroid hormones in the body. It regulates the thyroid’s release of two key hormones—triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)—which are essential for controlling metabolism, generating energy, and supporting overall growth and development. When the thyroid is underactive, a condition known as hypothyroidism, the pituitary gland responds by increasing TSH production in an attempt to stimulate hormone release. Conversely, in cases of hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid is overactive and produces excess hormones, the pituitary reduces TSH secretion. Therefore, measuring TSH levels in the blood helps detect thyroid imbalances early. Although typical reference values for TSH range between 0.4 and 4.0 milliunits per liter (mU/L), these values may vary slightly depending on the laboratory and testing methods used.
